FEELING DAUNTED, NERVOUS, OR JUST TIME-COMPRESSED?
If you are like many of my clients, you have served your country in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coastguard, have a wealth of experience and skills, but feel overwhelmed by the task of capturing that in a resume. Factor in trying to prepare for transition while you are still carrying out your regular military job, and it is no wonder you are feeling a little stressed.
You are not alone.
Even the most senior ranking military professionals struggle to identify which of their accomplishments are most relevant to civilian industries. Figuring out how to effectively communicate and sell those military successes in non- military terms is a separate problem, and finding the time to do that – well that’s just plain impossible.
So where do you start?
DEFINE YOUR TARGET.
This is vital, and it is not something your resume writer can do for you. You can’t effectively market yourself for a civilian job if you don’t have clearly defined goals. Do some soul-searching, talk to your family, research occupations and industries, and identify what you want next year, and long-term.
DEVELOP A RESUME THAT SPEAKS TO YOUR TARGET EMPLOYER’S NEEDS
Once your objective is defined, you are ready to start thinking about your resume. Too many transitioning veterans make the mistake of creating a resume that focuses on everything they have done, rather than answering the employer’s question, “What can you do for me?” A resume that is too general is rarely effective.
WHY WORK WITH MELANIE?
You can write your own resume, and your transition classes will give you the training and time to do this. But I suspect you know that.
You are here because you are not convinced that the resume you develop will get you interviews, and you are not willing to take that risk – financially or professionally.
By choosing to work with an Academy Certified Resume Writer, you are engaging an industry professional that stays abreast of trends in the recruiting landscape, and understands Applicant Tracking Systems, hiring processes, and resume best practices.
Melanie is also one of the few Certified Resume Writers that truly speaks your language.

CASE STUDY: Retiring Army Officer seeks Training or Operations Management role.
Background. One of the first things Andrew said when I met him was, “You probably should know my wife made me hire you. She said she wasn’t going to gamble our family’s future on the resume I wrote in an afternoon. So no pressure, but she’s expecting results.” Andrew was retiring from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Infantry, but faced the additional challenge of having spent the last ten years in OCONUS locations. He had done his research and decided on a move to Texas, drafted a resume in his transition class, but had not had any luck with it in his first month of job-searching.
Services Provided: Resume and Cover Letter
Result: To ensure that employers didn’t have the opportunity to screen Andrew out without taking the time to digest his resume, we developed a high-impact, modern resume that he could use to approach employers directly. This was a far more effective strategy in the highly competitive Training and Operations field. He quickly received calls from four separate employers to start the discussion about his down-track availability and preferred roles. He had the confidence his resume was working which allowed him to bide his time and wait for the right fit before saying yes. He and his family are now happily settled in San Antonio, Texas.
I’ll be honest. I was a dubious about paying to have my resume done but you proved me wrong. Couldn’t be happier with the end product. It was worth every cent. Sincere thanks from the whole family. – Andrew
